Personally, I hope that D&DScape can get the line through the current economy, but then I agree with some critics it would have been better to release a set with familiar characters like Drizzt or Morty or whatnot than a couple dwarves and drow, a troll, and a dragon. The terrain will include a new “dungeon” paint scheme (and repainted Tundra set icebergs painted as rocks), shadow tiles for some sort of Drow ability.Ī lot of fans are pissed at this development - although many are warming to it - because they feel that D&D minis are inferior (a question of taste hardcore Heroscape fans seem really hostile to other games, even ones produced by Hasbro, as everything else is “ugly” and has less “stratergy”), and they believe that it’s a death knell for the game as: if it takes off, then there’d only be fantasy units in the future, and if no one buys it, then Hasbro has every reason to shut it down. In early January, Wizards is releasing a new Heroscape Master Set that has a dungeon’s and dragons theme, where the figures are rebased, repainted (to match the eyeless, wash look of Heroscape) D&D minis with Heroscape stat cards. So anyone new getting into the game, like me, is largely a vulture, picking up Master Sets online for maybe a third of the MSRP, even as long time fans are complaining that they’re not being adequately served with the newest “wave” of boosters which contained some repainted reprints of figures that were once a Toy’s R Us exclusive or given out at Gencon (and thus until recently cost $50+ each!). OTOH, these people still can’t sell the terrain, only figures in booster packs. Smaller stores that wanted to carry it had to pay damn near retail for the master sets, which contain the bulk of the terrain that people want so badly.Įventually, the big stores started getting tired of how much space it took up and Hasbro decided to kick it down to the Wizard’s of the Coast brand, which would start aiming for hobby shops and general geek repositories. It got started by Hasbro for big stores like Walmart and Toy’s R Us. Heroscape is a game that shouldn’t exist. You’ve probably seen the terrain before: plastic, hex based, people try to use it for just about anything although I don’t really think it’s suitable for classic Battletech, although everyone seems to try it.
